DES MOINES – Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro today released statewide Election Day Registration totals.

Preliminary numbers received from the state’s 99 county auditors show 47,553 Iowans took advantage of EDR when they went to the polls on Election Day.

“Election Day Registration underwent its true test this election and no major issues were reported. County auditors and poll workers across the state who implemented this process did an outstanding job,” said Secretary of State Mauro.

“If not for EDR, tens of thousands of voting-eligible Iowans would not have been able to participate in this historic election. Iowans can be proud of our voting process – one which is not only accessible but also secure.”

Iowa has one of the top registration rates in the nation with 92-percent of voting-eligible Iowans registered to vote.

Statewide, 1,546,453 voters participated in this year’s general election – setting an all-time record total turnout.

County-by-county EDR totals and official results from the 2008 General Election can be viewed on the Secretary of State’s Web site, by visiting www.sos.state.ia.us.
